Never connect a cat5/cat5e or cat6 network to a Gigabit Ethernet system unless the network has been tested and certified to the appropriate standards. Doing so could seriously affect the performance of the system and even result in a complete shutdown!

Gigabit Ethernet (1000 million bits a second) operates at a much higher frequency than Fast Ethernet (100million bit a second) and as the frequency increases the condition of the cabling becomes critical. A network may be performing at 100mbits quite happily and many have been tempted to upgrade to Gigabit technology with disastrous consequences.

The reason is simple. Any device connected to a server via a cable will receive its data in the form of packets. Each packet is then verified by the device for data corruption and if corruption is found the device (PC laptop printer etc) will request the Server to resend the packet again and again and then again. Just one poor connection will slow down the system but several could cause the server to hang through trying to service successive retries.

Ampec have invested in the latest Fluke DTX1800 cable analysis equipment to ensure our networks are certified and future proof. All Ampec structured cabling installations are fully tested pre and post fitting using the latest Fluke DTX1800 cable analyser, to confirm that the cabling will allow data transmissions at Gigabit speed.

We will test and bring up to standard any existing network, if your network is running slowly, contact Ampec for a “network health check”.
